General information about weighing

I am interested in vehicle weighing in general
There are many different ways to weigh vehicles, especially heavy trucks. The traditional method is a standard static scale where the vehicle drives onto the platform, stops, and the operator or terminal collects the information. This method delivers high accuracy but is time-consuming and requires a scale longer than the vehicles being weighed. Due to the size of the scale, the system also becomes relatively expensive.
Another method is the use of axle scales. With these, vehicles do not need to stop and they take up less space compared to a conventional scale. However, the accuracy is poor—errors of more than ±5% are not uncommon.
The modern and efficient way is weighing with Motus Smart Weighing. Just like axle scales, you simply drive over the scale without stopping—but with the same accuracy as static weighing (down to ±0.1%). This is made possible thanks to Motus' world-unique, patented software, which uses a standard static scale of 6 meters (or longer) to precisely calculate not only the total weight, but also axle and bogie weights, vehicle configuration, and more. This works for virtually any vehicle length and takes no more than 15 seconds!
If, for any reason, you still need to stop on the scale, Motus Smart Weighing can streamline the administrative side as well. By replacing the fixed terminal with the Motus Smart Terminal, you receive weighing receipts directly on your smartphone—and, if desired, automatically in your business system.
I'm intrested in Motus Smart Weighing
Motus Smart Weighing is a Swedish, world-unique and patented system that automates and optimizes the weighing process for vehicle scales.
Our technology transforms your existing or new vehicle scale into an automatic measuring instrument capable of weighing vehicles in motion (AWI – Automatic Weighing). This means you no longer need to stop on the scale—something that was previously impossible to achieve with high accuracy. Our system, Motus WIM, is certified by the UK's National Measurement Office (NMO) for the highest accuracy class 0.2 according to the international standard OIML R134. The system also allows weighing of vehicles significantly longer than the scale itself, with the same accuracy, while also measuring axle and bogie weights—for example, to verify load distribution or compliance with regulations.
With our administrative system, Motus Smart Terminal, the entire weighing process is digitalized and in many areas automated, eliminating the need for fixed terminals. Weighing results and all related data can be managed directly on your smartphone or any connected device—whenever it suits you. During weighing, vehicles are identified by license plate recognition (camera) or RFID, and results are automatically linked to the vehicle. Additional information such as load, customer, or project can be added later by the driver or administrator. Naturally, all information can also be sent automatically via email and/or transferred directly to your business system.
Motus Smart Terminal works just as easily and efficiently with traditional scales where the vehicle stops (NAWI – Non-Automatic Weighing) as with our dynamic system where vehicles drive straight across. You can identify, record, and manage weighings from any device, anytime—completely removing the need for fixed terminals. When you are ready to take the next step and weigh without stopping, simply add LSV with MHS, and you'll have the market's most advanced vehicle weighing system.
These are just a few of the many benefits Motus Smart Weighing can deliver.
I want to be able to weigh both axle and total weight
The traditional way to determine axle and bogie weights has been to use axle scales. However, these do not provide very high accuracy—at best ±5%. As an alternative, authorities such as the police have used mobile weighing pads for their inspections to achieve higher accuracy. This method, however, is time-consuming and requires significant manual resources.
With Motus Smart Weighing, you receive all weighing data—axle, bogie, and total weight for each truck and trailer—directly on the driver's phone, ensuring they always have correct and up-to-date information. Click here to see an example of a weighing receipt that Motus delivers after just a 15-second drive across the scale—a complete report to guarantee optimal load distribution and regulatory compliance.
All data can also be transferred directly to the scale owner's business system for further processing.
I need to ensure that I comply with legal requirements
The traditional way to ensure compliance with axle and bogie weight regulations has been to use axle scales. While this works, the accuracy is limited (±5%) and the process is relatively time-consuming.
With Motus Smart Weighing, you receive all weighing data—axle, bogie, and total weight for each truck and trailer—directly on the driver's phone, ensuring they always have correct and up-to-date information. This makes it easy to plan your transports in line with current legislation and regulations for each journey. What's more, Motus Smart Weighing is a certified system according to OIML R134, guaranteeing that the weighing data you receive is accurate. More information about the certifications can be found here.
Is Motus Smart Weighing approved?
The short and simple answer is yes — Motus Smart Weighing meets the requirements for an automatic scale (commonly referred to as a dynamic scale) under Swedish regulations.
In addition, MHS, the hardware for dynamic weighing, is certified by the NMO in the UK according to OIML R134, which defines the requirements for automatic weighing. Certificates and further information can be found here.
